In his exhibition THE PRESENCE OF THE ABSENCE at the HEITSCH GALLERY, artist EIKE KÖNIG explores the connection between myth and language.
The two are closely interwoven and form a fascinating relationship that shapes human culture and our understanding of the world. Myths are not only stories that are passed down from generation to generation, but also deeply rooted narratives that reflect the values, beliefs and identity of a community. They help us to answer complex questions about life, death, nature and the universe – and at the same time feed the myth as the foundation of capitalism: the American dream, unlimited growth, equal opportunities and consumer culture are mythological pillars of a narrative that Eike König questions or sometimes simply addresses.
In Eike König’s works, language itself takes on a mythological quality. Certain words or phrases are charged with deep meanings that go beyond their literal meaning. Language is used as a tool to formulate, articulate and communicate abstract concepts and experiences.
His artistic works function as bridges that enable a bidirectional exchange between the inner and outer worlds, the present and the absent, and the tangible and the incorporeal.
Interpreting without signifying.
